Visit to the Gabe Gottes mine
Put on your helmet and protective jacket, and set off on an adventure through the Gabe Gottes mine. Organized by the ASEPAM – L’Aventure des Mines association, this unusual tour will take you into the mine’s underground galleries for some fascinating discoveries. Whether you’re a mineralogy enthusiast or a keen explorer, this is the event for you!
Opened in the 16th century and closed in 1940, the Gabe Gottes mine is the last mine in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines. On this guided underground tour, discover the remains of 400 years of ore mining and travel through the history of the mine and its miners. A network of galleries awaits your discovery.
Imagine yourself in the shoes of a miner of the time, and appreciate their hard work in particularly narrow galleries. More than just a walk, this underground journey will also enrich your knowledge of geology and mineralogy. In fact, what could be more concrete and instructive than studying the formation of rocks and minerals in the very places where they were created?
At the entrance to the mine, l’Aventure des Mines will equip you properly and prepare you for this unusual underground adventure. The network of galleries has been designed by the « Archéo-Mine » association to facilitate the journey, while preserving the authenticity of the site.

L'Aventure des Mines (association ASEPAM)
For more than 35 years, the "Association Spéléologique pour l'Etude et la Protection des Anciennes Mines" (ASEPAM) has been working to preserve and promote the mining, geological and mineralogical heritage of the Val d'Argent. This mining history is retraced in the permanent exhibition "Les Chemins de l'Argent" presented at L'Aventure des Mines, the association's premises. Throughout the year, ASEPAM's organizers and volunteers offer visitors the opportunity to discover two silver mines: the Saint-Louis Eisenthür mine and the Gabe Gottes mine, two underground routes that were opened for mining in the 16th century and have been preserved just as the miners left them. Specific events are regularly organized (historical reenactment in May, special Christmas visits...), in addition to the archaeological work site taking place every year in July.
