Stroll – Masterpieces of stained glass (Cathedral & Basilica)

With Troyes Champagne Tourisme, enjoy an hour and a half of discovery and wonder as you explore the stained-glass windows of Troyes! Nine centuries of history await you through two guided tour itineraries on different dates. On Wednesdays, July 26 and August 9, the tour will take you to Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul Cathedral and Saint-Urbain Basilica in Troyes.

As the European capital of stained glass, Troyes boasts an impressive collection of stained-glass windows dating from the Middle Ages to the present day. Among the 9,000 m² of stained-glass windows in the Aube department, the “Beautiful 16th-Century” works of Troyes and the Aube region include 1,042 windows designated as Historic Monuments. These masterpieces, created using a variety of techniques and conveying messages steeped in history, include several pieces that will be revealed to you during this tour.

Located in the heart of the “Bouchon de Champagne,” the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul stands, among others, as one of Troyes’ architectural gems adorned with exceptional stained-glass windows. There you’ll find magnificent works dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, such as the depiction of the New Testament’s victory over the Old Testament, which beautifully adorns the church’s choir.

As you step through the doors of the Basilica of Saint-Urbain, you’ll also be struck by the elegance and luminosity of the space, enhanced by a collection of stunning stained-glass windows. The transept and choir, in particular, have retained their original stained-glass windows, which date back to the 1270s. The Last Judgment tympanum will also catch your eye with its vividly colored stained-glass window. It’s sure to take you on a true artistic and cultural journey into the heart of Troyes’ history!
