Stroll – Masterpieces of stained glass (Sainte-Madeleine & Saint-Pantaléon)

Discover Troyes’ famous stained-glass windows on a fascinating cultural stroll! The Tourist Office has put together some unique tours for you to explore these magnificent works of art, steeped in centuries of history. Three dates are available to explore two iconic buildings that share this priceless treasure: the Church of Sainte-Madeleine and the Church of Saint-Pantaléon!

This guided tour is simply a must-see for lovers of history, culture, and architecture! For while the Aube department boasts over 9,000 m² of stained-glass windows, the “Beautiful 16th” style of Troyes and the Aube region alone has bequeathed to us 1,042 windows designated as Historic Monuments. A concentration and quality of stained-glass windows you won’t find anywhere else—and some of these masterpieces await you at the Church of Sainte-Madeleine and the Church of Saint-Pantaléon in Troyes.

The Genesis, The Life of Saint Eloi, The Tree of Jesse, and The Triumph of the Cross… The colorful stained-glass windows at Sainte-Madeleine, in particular, showcase some of the works produced by the Troyes School during the early Renaissance. With their vibrant hues and bold designs, these windows reflect great technical refinement, which you can observe up close during your visit.

Dating from the 15th century, the stained-glass windows of Saint-Pantaléon Church are sure to captivate you with their historiated grisaille panels. Among the most remarkable works, the stained-glass panels depicting the Story of Daniel and The Passion in particular mark the birth of a new style in glass painting. Less intense, more subtle, yet just as refined and expressive.

Following the reopening of the Cité du Vitrail, this tour spans nearly nine centuries of stained-glass history, from the Middle Ages to the present day. The tour will take place over a 90-minute period starting at 3:00 p.m. We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before the tour begins.
