Discover the treasures of Vitry-le-François and the surrounding area on a tour rich in heritage and wine-growing landscapes! From Vitry-le-François to the Porte du Pont, via Mont Moret, this is an itinerary steeped in history.
The adventure begins in Vitry-le-François, created by François I and his Italian architect Marini. The "Pink City", as it is known, was destroyed during the Second World War, then rebuilt identically... And it's also a must for walkers! Yes, the village is crossed by the GR®654 and GR®145 on the way to Santiago de Compostela or Rome. Before fastening your seatbelts, don't forget to visit the collegiate church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption (the largest classical-style building in the département), then take one of the four main roads out of town. The statue of the goddess of the Marne stands in the middle of the road! As you leave Vitry-le-François, keep your eyes peeled for the Porte du Pont, one of the last vestiges of the town's fortifications.
You then enter the smallest terroir in Champagne: welcome to the Vitry hillsides! After a few minutes' drive through Chardonnay vineyards, you'll arrive in Vitry-en-Perthois. Lace up your hiking boots and climb the Mont Fourche in search of marvellous panoramic views over the Marne plain.
Back behind the wheel, you'll pass through a host of small Perthois villages: Changy, Vavray-le-Grand, Vavray-le-Petit, Val de Vière, Bassuet, etc. In each of them, the Vitry winegrowers will be delighted to open the doors of their estates to you!
Next stop on the tour: Saint-Amand-sur-Fion: As you wander through the narrow streets of Saint-Amand-sur-Fion, you'll be charmed by the timber-framed houses and the medieval church with its arched porch. Then cross the Champagne bocage to Mont Moret, a symbol of the fierce fighting that struck Vitry-le-François in the First World War. The stage comes to an end a little further on, towards Frignicourt, between the Marne and the canal.
