At the source of the Meuse

On the Langres plateau, heading towards the foothills of the Vosges mountains, this is where your cycling trip along the Meuse really begins.

The birthplace of the famous Flammarion brothers, who became famous in the fields of astronomy and publishing, has an interesting little rural heritage. As you wander through the narrow streets of Montigny-le-Roi, discover the 19th-century fountains and wash-houses that bear witness to daily life in days gone by.

The next stop on your journey is Pouilly-en-Bassigny, where the Meuse river originates. A monument marks its source and traces the course of this 950 km long river.

The route continues until you reach Bourmont. Overlooking the Meuse valley, this ancient fortified town is perched on a rocky spur. Access to the village is well worth a last pedal! Once you reach the top, the panoramic view from the forecourt of the collegiate church of Notre-Dame will reward your efforts. Bourmont is a "Petite Cité de Caractère" (small town of character), with a number of fine monuments that bear witness to the town's rich past. The Parc des Roches, with its surprising stone decorations, and the Promenade du Côna, with its two-hundred-year-old lime trees, are sure to immerse you in the romantic atmosphere of the 19th century. The whole area has been awarded the Jardins Remarquables label.
