The fortified town of Châtenois
This 11th stage alternates between vineyards and forests until it reaches the pretty town of Châtenois.
The first few kilometres of this stage pass through vineyards overlooking Barr, Mittelbergheim and Andlau. Enjoy the beauty of the vineyards before continuing through the forest.
After crossing the Col de l'Ungersberg, you continue through the massif of the same name and enjoy beautiful views over the Alsace plain and the Vosges peaks. The Tour Héring, built at the top of the Ungersberg massif, offers a panoramic view of the surrounding forest.
A little further on, the remains of medieval castles can be discovered. First there is Bernstein Castle, one of the oldest in Alsace, then Ortenboug Castle and finally Ramstein Castle below.
The vineyards return as you arrive in the pretty fortified town of Châtenois. Take the opportunity to walk around the ramparts and lose yourself in the narrow streets, discovering typical Alsatian houses. The 15th-century Gothic tower gate, known as the Tour des Sorcières (Witches' Tower), and the church of St Georges are particularly noteworthy! Wine-lovers will be delighted by a visit to the cellars and a tasting of the local grape varieties*. And to round off the day's walking in style, what better way than with a taste of Alsatian specialities? Flammekueche or sauerkraut: what will you fall for?
*Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health, so drink in moderation.
