Charles V chose the site for his fortress because of the natural rocky promontory overlooking the Meuse valley. A strong natural defense coveted by the European giants until 1914, today it offers magnificent panoramic views of the Givet citadel and the Meuse.
A network of successive defences for decades, listed as a Monument Historique in 1927, Charlemont became France's first Commando Training Centre from 1961 until 2009. Discover the traces of its long history on this self-guided tour.
