Guided tour of the Vauban Fortifications in Longwy
What would you say to a historical outing in the Pays de Longwy, taking a leap back to the 17th century and discovering the footprints left by war? Treat yourself to a guided tour of Vauban's fortifications in Longwy. The Pays de Longwy Tourist Office has put together a fascinating tour for you.
Whether you're on your own, a couple or a family, treat yourself to a trip back in time. For 1h30 to 1h45, your guide will take you on a tour of the bastioned fortifications designed by Vauban, whose military engineering was a real boon to Louis XIV. Vauban's fortifications were built in 1679 under Louis XIV. One of 9 cities built "ex nihilo", i.e. from scratch, Longwy is a true representation of the engineer's ideal city.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, the Place Forte de Longwy features a sophisticated defense system. During the guided tour, you'll explore an exceptional cross-shaped underground passageway, a powder magazine and many of the city's historic monuments. These include the Porte de France and its half-moon, the Place d'Armes, the Puits de Siège and the military bakery. Every step of the way offers something new to discover, and plenty to enjoy.
