For lovers of castles, take a step back in time and plunge into the medieval world with a self-guided tour of the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg at Orschwiller in Alsace. Overlooking the Alsace plain, it can be enjoyed by two, with family or friends.
Located some ten kilometers from Sélestat, from where it can be seen, this 12th-century fortified castle is one of the region's must-sees. Extensively altered three centuries later and fully restored in the 20th century, this immense pink sandstone fortress covers an area of 1.5 hectares.
From the moment you cross the drawbridge, you're immersed in 15th-century daily life. Fully equipped and furnished dwellings, collections of medieval weapons, forge, mill... the building is impressive!
Perched at an altitude of 757 m, this historic monument dominates the Alsace plain. A strategic position that was relatively easy to defend in the past, today it offers a magnificent view of the Vosges and the Black Forest from its Grand Bastion. Collectivité européenne d'Alsace - Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg
Nestled at an altitude of nearly 800 meters, in the heart of the Vosges forest, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle, property of the European Collectivity of Alsace, dominates the famous wine route that winds at its feet. The fortress reveals to the general public all the richness of the Alsatian heritage preciously preserved within the majestic ramparts.
Built in the 12th century, the monument has crossed the ages at the rhythm of the destructions and the multiple reconstructions, of which it carries the traces. A medieval castle, it reached the peak of its architectural development at the end of the 15th century. Demolished a few years earlier, it was entrusted to the Counts of Tierstein. The latter rebuilt and modernized it to adapt it to the progress of artillery. In 1481, it was brand new!
Burned again in the 17th century, in ruins and a place for hiking in the 19th century, restored in the early 20th century to celebrate the greatness of William II, German emperor... Between glorious times and dark moments, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle fascinates by its tumultuous history! In 1919, the monument became part of the French national domain, then was transferred to the Department of Bas-Rhin in 2007.
With its rich past, the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle continues to write its history over the years! As a living monument, the fortress offers a rich and diversified cultural program throughout the year. Storytelling, participatory workshops, nature outings, medieval camps, exhibitions ... allow you to (re)discover the fortress under an unusual face! Whether they are dramatized, thematic, unusual or commented, visits adapted to everyone reveal the secrets of the castle: from the magnificent kitchen installed by William II to the rites and customs of the Middle Ages, nearly 900 years of history pass before the astonished eyes of visitors.
