Guided tour of the Four-à-Chaux in Lembach – Maginot Line
Plunge into the heart of history, and treat yourself to a guided tour of the Four-à-Chaux fortress in Lembach. Part of the 108 forts of the Maginot Line, this large 2nd-class artillery structure was built in 1931 to defend the Franco-German border. It's a surprising structure that will take you back to the inter-war period for a visit.
Overlooking the village of Lembach, the Four-à-Chaux fortress takes you on a fascinating historical exploration. Damaged during the battles of 1940 and by explosive tests during the German occupation, this fortress was restored at the start of the Cold War to welcome you today. Put on your walking shoes and descend 30 m underground to discover the 3 km of galleries. Comprising 8 blocks, this fortified structure housed 600 men and 24 officers until 1940.
During your visit, you'll discover the living conditions of soldiers at the time. Pass through the dormitories, kitchens, infirmary and sanitary facilities, and imagine what daily life was like for these men almost 80 years ago. After their last mobilization in August 1939, these men also built their lives here, setting up a grocery store and collecting livestock and alcohol in the village of Lembach. An astonishing piece of world history, which we'll tell you more about on this guided walk.
