Guided tour of the Romanesque Abbey of Etival-Clairefontaine
Let yourself be seduced by the splendor of the Romanesque Abbey of Etival-Clairefontaine! The Saint-Dié-des-Vosges Intercommunal Tourist Office invites you on a guided tour to discover an architectural heritage that can’t be ignored. This Romanesque abbey church stands on the banks of the Valdange river.
It became an important abbey in 1147 under the Prémontrés order, and was visited by such luminaries as Saint Odile, the Empress Richarde and the Queen of France. Its first paper mill, known as the forerunner of the Clairefontaine paper mills, was built by its monks in the early 16th century.
In addition to its rich history, Etival la Romane is a church of exceptional beauty. It features front doors and stalls, all designed in the 18th century. During the tour, appreciate the rich evolution of these architectural works over time, including the Romanesque capitals, its Gothic choir, its garden over the cloister and the various works of the Gruber and Emmanuel Chauche family; namely the fortifications and contemporary stained glass windows that adorn the building.
The guided tour is open to all, whatever your age. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult.
