Visit of the Douaumont fort
Fort de Douaumont is the most powerful structure in the Verdun stronghold. Captured by surprise 4 days after the start of the Battle of Verdun, it was occupied for 8 months by the German army, which used it as a shelter for its troops and as an essential base for pursuing its offensive. Despite several reconquest attempts, the fort was not retaken until October 24, 1916.
Period films and photographs, archival documents, commentary and personal accounts help visitors, equipped with a multimedia guide, to better understand the history of this site.
Discover a chamber, the 155 turret and the German necropolis, where over 600 German soldiers are buried.
