Visit of the Fort de Vaux
Right from the start of the Battle of Verdun, Fort de Vaux, a fort built according to the Séré de Rivière system, was one of the priority targets of the German offensive. At the beginning of March 1916, the Germans, who had arrived within a few hundred meters of the fort, began a 100-day siege. In the fort, subjected to a deluge of artillery fire, resistance was organized despite the lack of food and water. On June1, 1916, the Germans reached the fort: the French garrison, isolated and without outside support, fought a week of heroic battles inside the fort, before being defeated by exhaustion.
Immerse yourself in the history of this episode of the 14-18 war with a visit to Fort de Vaux. The tour provides an insight into the daily living conditions of the besieged soldiers at the heart of the fortress. Take part in the memory of the Great War by honoring the actors in a heroic drama that has become a symbol of the resistance of the Verdun soldier.
