6-day luggage-free itinerary on the GR 5 from Barr to Munster
Get ready for a unique touring adventure in the heart of the Massif des Vosges and Alsace. Over 6 days and 109 kilometers, you’ll discover the richness of the Vosges landscape, with its vineyards, deep forests, majestic peaks and glacial lakes. Thanks to our luggage transport system, you’ll walk lightly while exploring the region’s exceptional natural and cultural heritage!
You’ll start your journey in Barr, a renowned wine-growing village and former sacred site of the Druids. You’ll cross the vineyards to reach Andlau, where you’ll admire the Romanesque abbey church. Afterwards, you’ll climb through the forest to Ungersberg (901 m), where you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view from the Tour Héring. The first day ends in Blienschwiller, where you’ll stay with a local winemaker.
Day 2 takes you to the ruins of the imposing castles of Bernstein, Ortenbourg and Ramstein. You’ll then descend to Châtenois, a charming village surrounded by ramparts and vineyards. Stop off to taste the famous Alsatian wines in a local cellar before resting for the night.
You’ll start Stage 3 by crossing the Montagne des Singes, where you can observe Barbary macaques. Continue on to the majestic Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, before reaching the medieval village of Ribeauvillé, where you’ll spend the night in an enchanting setting.
Day 4, explore the Ribeauvillé castles, including the imposing Saint-Ulrich, before entering the Vosges forest. The trail will take you to the village of Aubure, the highest in the Vosges, where you can relax in a peaceful setting surrounded by nature.
Stage 5 takes you to the summit of Brézouard (1229 m), from where you can admire breathtaking panoramic views of the Vosges and Alsace. You’ll pass over the Col des Bagenelles before reaching the Étang du Devin, an exceptional natural site with its protected peat bog and view of the Black Forest.
On this last day, you’ll climb the Tête des Faux, a place steeped in history. You’ll then follow the Vosges ridges, offering spectacular views over the Alsatian valleys. You’ll pass Lac Blanc, famous for its crystal-clear waters, before descending to Munster, where your tour ends.

The ideal time to do this traverse is from March/April to November.
