The castles of Ribeauvillé
From surprising animal discoveries to the mythical Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, this 12th stage of the Traversée du Massif des Vosges is sure to delight the curious!
Leaving from Châtenois, your first stop is sure to please all animal lovers! Welcome to the Montagne des Singes, one of Alsace's iconic animal parks! Observe the Barbary macaques in an exceptional environment and in conditions close to their wild state. And don't miss the Volerie des Aigles, a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of birds of prey!
After this fun-filled break, the route continues on to another not-to-be-missed site. On its pink sandstone spur overlooking the Alsace plain, Haut-Koenigsbourg castle awaits you for a plunge back into the Middle Ages. Cross the drawbridge and step back in time! From the lower courtyard with its forge and mill, to the lord's furnished flats and impressive collections of weapons, relive the great hours of this castle! At an altitude of 757 m, admire the magnificent view of the Vosges and the Black Forest.... or even the Alps in fine weather!
Once you've satisfied your curiosity, it's time to get back on the road to Thannenkirch. Make the most of the opportunity to take a break in this pretty village to relax or enjoy a meal. If you do the Traversée du Massif des Vosges in spring, you'll have the chance to admire the cherry blossom in the orchards!
As you approach Ribeauvillé , you will see the remains of the three castles that overlook the medieval town: Giersberg, Haut-Ribeaupierre and Saint-Ulrich, the most imposing and best preserved of Ribeauvillé's three castles.
