- The importance of knowing how to recognize tracks: some animals are very discreet, even shy. Others are nocturnal. This can make it difficult to spot them. However, by observing the tracks they are likely to leave behind them, you can get an idea of the "invisible" fauna of an area. A footprint in soft soil, a few hairs on the bark of a tree, a nibbled spruce cone or a turd on the ground will tell us whether a particular animal has been there or not... provided you know how to "read" these traces and signs of life!
